Omnisport Apeldoorn will be hosting the European Track Cycling Championships for juniors and under 23 this summer. Organizer Libéma Profcycling announced the candidacy at the beginning of April. The European Cycling Association (UEC) has now also announced that the tournament has been definitively assigned to Apeldoorn. This tournament will take place from 17 to 22 August 2021.
“It is a very beautiful and very welcome message that we will be hosting this event. After the European Championship in 2019, partly due to Covid-19, there was no major (inter) national event in Omnisport. For the city, the sport and everyone involved, this tournament will hopefully be the start of much more, “said project leader Rens Kamphuis.
Nathan Stukker, Alderman for Sports: “The fact that Omnisport can once again be the host of a European championship is wonderful for the city of Apeldoorn. After we previously received fantastic (international) tournaments on the cycling track of Omnisport Apeldoorn, a European Junior Championship and promises is a very nice tournament. A source of inspiration for our youthful athletes. After a difficult period due to Covid-19, we can look forward to a bright future on the cycling track again. ”
The organization strives to have the tournament take place where the public can “just” be present and enjoy this European Championship live. Naturally, the necessary Covid-19 measures will be taken if the situation so requires.
“Future Olympic riders”
The participants in this European Championship will form the elite selections of the future. Due to the home advantage, the Dutch team will be at the start with a wide selection. For national coach Fulco van Gulik this is an excellent opportunity to get a good picture of the potential of the riders. After all, they form the new generation that must (continue to) provide the medals of honor towards the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028.
